Gales developing for the western Mediterranean
Wednesday Low pressure affects north-western Europe, bringing cool and unsettled conditions to France and the Low Countries. Some heavy rain for the western Mediterranean, Italy and the Balkans. Heavy snow for the southern & western Alps, continuing into the night. Some snow too for the Pyrenees. Pulses of heavy showers will move south-east across Spain, although Portugal may escape often dry. Widespread strong winds, with gales around Biscay and the English Channel. Meanwhile, much of eastern Europe stays dry and mild, with south to southwesterly winds. Local showers for Greece. Highs 15C around the Black Sea. Slack low pressure across Scandinavia, with areas of snow moving around slowly for central Sweden and western Norway. Plenty of dry weather in the far north, and staying very cold. Fairly mild for the southern Baltic.
Thursday An active storm system over Italy brings gales to the western Mediterranean and southern France, perhaps also the Alps. Thundery showers for Italy. Persistent heavy rain affects western Greece and the southern Balkan states. Southerly winds affect eastern Europe, maintaining mild conditions. A few showers for Portugal and southern Spain, although eastern Spain should stay dry and fairly warm. Largely dry for central France, although some rain moves into the north-west. Chilly winds for the Low Countries and Germany, bringing bands of wintry showers in from the North Sea. Some snow for the Alps. Patchy rain for Poland. Low pressure over Denmark produces rain for southern coastal parts of Scandinavia, but heavy snow for central Norway and Sweden. The far north stays dry and very cold.
