Soaring temperatures southern Spain

Tuesday
Low pressure brings unsettled and fairly cool conditions to northern Europe, whilst southern regions stay hot, sunny and dry. Thundery rain moves north across the Baltic through the day, with heavy rain also breaking out widely across the mountains of Norway and Sweden. A westerly breeze affects north-central Europe, with outbreaks of rain for Germany, the Low Countries and Poland. A front moves east across Belarus and western Ukraine bringing thundery rain.
Some rain threatens northern France, and it will be windy around English Channel coasts, but much of France should be dry as high pressure builds in from Biscay - warmest in the south, highs 30 to 33C. Thundery showers for the Alps. Countries surrounding the Mediterranean will be dry and hot, 35 to 40C in southern Spain and Portugal, southern Italy, mainland Greece and the Balkans. Hot and dry too around the Black Sea.

Wednesday
An area of low pressure moves eastwards across northern-central Europe, bringing heavy rain and blustery winds to the Low Countries, much of Germany, then Poland. Thundery rain will also be triggered for Switzerland and Austria. Southern Scandinavia should just escape the worst of this system, although patchy rain is likely, and it will become windy for Denmark and southern Norway. Low pressure toward the far north brings showery and cool conditions.
Meanwhile, southern Europe stays hot and dry. A flow of air from the continental interior of Iberia may send temperatures over 40C in southern Spain and Portugal. A strong Mistral wind for southern France. Mid-30s Celsius widely across Italy, the Balkans and Greece . Scattered thunderstorms for Romania and Ukraine.
